- Well, not really. In particular, there are two S registers that I like to
- tweak: S13 and S15; I don't recall which is which, but a bit in one removes
- the delay when responding to AT commands and a bit in the other reduces the
- modem's buffer when making non error-correcting connections.
-
- The reduced buffer makes sure that no data is lost because it's still in the
- buffer when a hangup is ordered. This is very useful for not cutting off
- signoff messages on host systems.
-
- The immediate response bit lets you build all sorts of tricky solutions. For
- instance, one BBS operator wanted to enable adaptive answer (FAX/data
- discrimination) when answering a call but wanted to be firmly in data mode
- when calling out; unfortunately, the software he was using didn't accommodate
- this by guaranteeing known state, so I made up a six-command answer string to
- be issued when the software saw the "RING" response code, essentially
- reconfiguring the modem for every incoming call so that I could guarantee that
- all important aspects of the modem were in a known state regardless of what
- outgoing data calls had done to the modem's settings. This does not work if I
- go back to normal response code delay time.
-
- When configuring diallers, I also like to force B1 mode over B0 if I know
- that both modems are Dual Standards and speak HST faster than V.32[bis|terbo],
- but the answer string should specify B0 to allow V.32[...] connections.
-
- I don't recall if selective compression enabling (&K3?) is also a default, but
- some users who spend their time transferring .GIF and .ZIP files prefer it.
-
- Of course, there's also the bit that cancels the V.8 'call indicate' tone,
- which confuses the daylights out of some older modems.
-
- There's *lots* of stuff to play with on a USR modem, especially the Courier
- and even more especially the DS.
